Maritimes Chapter

PCAs, CCAs, PSWs, and Support Workers are frontline healthcare professionals and valued members of the interprofessional team in long-term care, hospitals, nursing homes, and community settings.

They provide essential support in all aspects of daily living, including companionship, physical, spiritual, and psycho-social care, while also supporting families through end-of-life care. These professionals care for individuals with complex and diverse needs, including chronic illness, aging-related conditions, physical and intellectual disabilities, and mental health challenges.

In Nova Scotia, PCAs/CCAs are part of a provincial registry, which helps recognize and track the workforce. However, being part of CANSWA is critical—a registry does not advocate for you.

CANSWA membership is important because it provides:

A national voice and advocacy for Support Workers, CCAs, PCAs, and PSWs

Professional recognition and credibility across provinces

Access to education, certifications, and professional development

Liability insurance and protection options

Resources, tools, and support to strengthen frontline practice

A unified community working to elevate and standardize the profession across Canada

Being part of your professional association ensures your voice is heard, your work is recognized, and your profession continues to grow and gain the respect it deserves.
